About the Program
Heal, Support, and Make a Difference in the Heart of the Peruvian Highlands!
Access to quality healthcare remains a challenge in many communities in Peru, particularly in regions outside major urban centers. Local clinics in Cusco and the Sacred Valley play a vital role in providing essential medical services to families who may otherwise have limited access to care. This project supports these clinics by providing extra helping hands to local healthcare teams while offering volunteers valuable insight into healthcare delivery in a developing country context.
The Healthcare Support project places volunteers in local clinics where they work alongside nurses, doctors, and administrative staff. The main role of the volunteer is supportive and observational. Volunteers help with patient intake, organize materials, assist with basic administrative tasks, and take simple measurements such as height and weight when appropriate. Volunteers may also shadow medical professionals, observe consultations, and learn about local treatment protocols, patient communication, and the daily realities of clinic work.
Volunteers are not expected to replace trained professionals or perform medical procedures independently. The level of involvement depends on Spanish language ability, relevant background, and demonstrated responsibility. In a clinical setting, trust and professionalism are essential. Volunteers are expected to be respectful, patient, proactive, and willing to learn while strictly following staff guidance and clinic rules.
The project takes place in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, areas known for their rich cultural heritage and strong indigenous traditions. Volunteers live with local host families, which provides a safe environment and an opportunity for authentic cultural exchange. Living with a host family allows volunteers to better understand daily life in Peru, practice Spanish, and build meaningful connections with the local community.
This program is especially suitable for students or individuals interested in medicine, nursing, public health, or healthcare-related careers who are looking for real-world exposure in an international setting. Volunteers can expect a supportive environment, guidance from local staff, cultural immersion, and the opportunity to develop cross-cultural communication skills. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for a clinical environment, closed shoes, and a respectful attitude toward local customs and professional healthcare standards.
Typical day
A Typical Volunteering Week
Volunteers work at the clinic from Monday to Friday, usually from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM, depending on the clinic’s needs and patient flow.
A typical day begins with arriving at the clinic in the morning, greeting staff, and receiving task guidance from nurses or supervisors. Throughout the day, volunteers primarily observe and support daily clinic operations while learning how healthcare is delivered in this setting.
Volunteers may:
Shadow doctors and nurses during consultations and routine medical activities.
Observe clinic operations and common healthcare procedures.
Support nurses by preparing materials and basic equipment for patient care.
Assist with measuring patients, such as height, weight, and other basic non-invasive checks when appropriate.
Help with administrative tasks, including patient admission and file organization.
Support staff in organizing and updating patient history reports.
Each day can vary depending on patient numbers and clinic priorities. Some days are more observation-focused, while others involve more administrative or support tasks. Volunteers are expected to remain flexible, follow staff instructions, and maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
Free-time Activities
Cusco offers an unforgettable mix of culture, history, adventure, and natural beauty, making it the perfect place to enjoy your free time while volunteering. Surrounded by the Andes and rich Incan heritage, the city gives you endless opportunities to explore, relax, and connect with local life.
On weekends or during free days, you can take part in some of Peru’s most iconic excursions. Popular trips include the Sacred Valley (Maras & Moray), where you can visit ancient salt mines and agricultural terraces, and the Valle VIP tour, which combines highlights of the Sacred Valley in one day. For mountain lovers, the stunning Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain offers colorful landscapes without the intense crowds of Vinicunca.
Machu Picchu is of course a must-see, and Cusco offers several ways to get there. You can travel by train, car, or join adventurous treks such as the Inca Trail (2 days), the Inca Jungle Trek (4 days), or the famous Salkantay Trek (5 days). Each option gives you a different way to experience the Andes, from lush jungle paths to dramatic high-altitude passes.
If you enjoy nature and wildlife, you can visit the Tambopata Rainforest and Lake Sandoval to see monkeys, birds, and exotic plants in the Amazon basin. For a cultural experience, a trip to Lake Titicaca lets you explore floating islands and indigenous communities, while Huacachina offers sandboarding and dune buggy rides in a desert oasis.
Cusco is also one of the best cities in the world to learn and practice Spanish. Locals speak clearly and slowly, making it easy to understand and communicate. You can practice your Spanish while shopping in local markets, ordering food, joining tours, or chatting with people from Peru and other parts of Latin America.
Whether you prefer hiking, history, culture, or simply enjoying café life in the Plaza de Armas, Cusco offers something for every traveler and makes your volunteer experience even more enriching.
